UltraView DEL™
UDEI’s proprietary intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy targets the inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction at the root of most dry eye disease. Over 3–4 sessions, UltraView DEL reduces vascular inflammation, restores gland function, and delivers lasting comfort.
Why IPL is different
An Active Treatment, Not a Passive One
Most dry eye treatments are passive — drops, gels, and plugs manage symptoms but don’t address the underlying biology. UltraView DEL is active. It uses precisely calibrated intense pulsed light (IPL) to target the inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction that cause the majority of dry eye disease.
Where conventional approaches provide temporary relief, IPL therapy works at the cellular level: collapsing the abnormal blood vessels that drive chronic eyelid inflammation, stimulating meibomian gland secretion, and reducing the bacterial toxins that degrade your tear film. The result is a measurable improvement in tear quality and ocular surface health — not just temporary symptom masking.
Why “UltraView DEL”?
UltraView DEL is UDEI’s proprietary IPL protocol, developed and refined by our dry eye specialists. “DEL” stands for Dry Eye Light — a treatment pathway designed specifically for ocular surface disease, not adapted from dermatological IPL. The protocol, settings, and treatment sequence are calibrated for the unique anatomy and biology of the eyelid and tear film.
Four mechanisms of action
How UltraView DEL Works
UltraView DEL uses precisely calibrated light wavelengths to address dry eye through four complementary biological pathways. Each mechanism reinforces the others, producing a cumulative therapeutic effect across the treatment course.
Reduce Inflammation
IPL collapses abnormal blood vessels (telangiectasia) around the eyelid margin that drive chronic inflammation. By eliminating these vessels, the inflammatory cascade is interrupted at its source — not just suppressed with medication.
Restore Glands
Controlled thermal energy stimulates meibomian gland secretion and helps unblock obstructed glands. The glands resume producing healthy meibum — the lipid layer that prevents your tears from evaporating too quickly.
Decrease Toxins
IPL reduces bacterial lipase production on the eyelid surface. These bacterial enzymes break down the lipid layer of your tear film, accelerating evaporation. Reducing them allows your tear film to remain stable longer.
Promote Healing
Increased blood flow to the treated area supports corneal and conjunctival repair. The combined anti-inflammatory and restorative effects create conditions for the ocular surface to heal and stabilize.
Who benefits
Who UltraView DEL Is For
UltraView DEL is designed for patients whose dry eye is driven by inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction — the most common underlying causes. Your comprehensive evaluation determines whether IPL is the right path for your specific presentation.
Moderate-to-severe dry eye
Patients with persistent symptoms — grittiness, burning, redness, foreign body sensation — that haven’t responded adequately to drops, warm compresses, or other first-line treatments.
Inflammatory dry eyeMeibomian gland dysfunction
Patients with clinically confirmed MGD: blocked or underperforming glands, lipid deficiency in the tear film, and evaporative symptoms. Imaging confirms the glands are present but obstructed.
Evaporative dry eyeChronic blepharitis
Patients with ongoing eyelid margin inflammation, crusting, or redness that contributes to tear film instability. IPL addresses the vascular inflammation that perpetuates the blepharitis cycle.
Lid margin diseaseReducing drop dependency
Patients who want to move beyond frequent artificial tear use and address the underlying problem. Many patients reduce their drop frequency significantly after completing the IPL course.
Long-term comfortPost-inflammatory dry eye
Patients whose dry eye developed after an inflammatory event — surgery, infection, or systemic condition — and whose ocular surface remains unstable despite conventional treatment.
Secondary dry eyeNot ideal: contraindications
Active eye infection, recent eyelid surgery (wait 3+ months), certain photosensitizing medications, pregnancy, or severe actinic eyelid damage. Your evaluation will clarify suitability.

The Treatment Protocol: Step by Step
Each UltraView DEL session takes approximately 15 minutes. Most patients complete 3–4 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart. Here’s what a typical session looks like.
Protective eyewear
Specialized protective shields are placed over your eyes to ensure complete safety during the light pulses. Your clinician verifies proper fit before proceeding.
Cooling gel application
A thin layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area around your eyelids. This ensures even light distribution and protects the skin surface during treatment.
Calibrated light pulses
The IPL handpiece delivers precisely calibrated light pulses to the upper and lower eyelid areas. Settings are customized for your skin type and eye anatomy. You’ll feel gentle warmth — some patients describe a faint snapping sensation.
Meibomian gland expression
Following the light pulses, your clinician may perform gentle manual expression of the meibomian glands while they are warm and responsive. This helps clear any remaining obstructions.
Done — zero downtime
The gel is removed and you’re finished. Return to normal activities immediately. No restrictions on screens, driving, or exercise. Some patients notice mild redness around the treated area that resolves within hours.
The treatment course
Session 1: Baseline treatment, initial gland stimulation and inflammation reduction. Sessions 2–3: Reinforcement — continued inflammation reduction and gland restoration. Session 4: Final optimization of results. Some patients see benefit after 2 sessions; others benefit from the full course. We assess your response at each visit and recommend the optimal number for your eyes.
The timeline
Results and What Improves
IPL results build progressively across the treatment course. While some patients notice modest improvement after the first session, the full benefit emerges after 2–4 sessions as inflammation reduces and gland function normalizes.
- After session 1: some patients notice modest improvement; others see more benefit as sessions continue
- After sessions 2–3: 60–70% of patients report significant symptom improvement — reduced grittiness, burning, and redness
- After full course (3–4 sessions): 80% of patients see improved tear stability, reduced inflammation markers, and measurable comfort gains
- What improves: dryness, redness, foreign body sensation, blurred vision, and drop dependency — many patients reduce or discontinue frequent artificial tears
- 3–6 months: typical benefit period with proper home care (lid hygiene, omega-3 supplementation, warm compresses)
- 6–12+ months: many patients maintain results long-term; some benefit from annual “touch-up” sessions to sustain improvement
We track your progress objectively at each follow-up visit: tear osmolarity, lipid layer quality, meibomian gland expression, and ocular surface staining. These measurements confirm that treatment is working — not just how you feel, but what we can measure.
Safety profile
UltraView DEL has an excellent safety profile when performed by trained optometrists. Potential side effects are rare and mild: temporary redness on treated skin (resolves within hours), minimal discomfort during treatment, and very rarely, transient pigmentation changes in lighter skin types. Pre-treatment screening ensures you’re a safe candidate.
Connected care
UltraView DEL Within the UVG Ecosystem
IPL is rarely the only tool. Dry eye is often multifactorial, and our integrated network lets us coordinate care across expertise without scattering you between separate institutions.
Post-cataract dry eye? Our colleagues at Uptown Eye Specialists refer their most challenging post-surgical dry eye cases to UDEI. UltraView DEL addresses the inflammation that often flares after cataract surgery, restoring comfort and tear stability during the critical healing window.
Post-LASIK dry eye? Patients from U Eye Laser Cosmetic whose dry eye persists beyond the typical recovery period benefit from IPL’s targeted anti-inflammatory action — addressing the root cause rather than relying on drops indefinitely.
Combination therapy? Many patients benefit most from UltraView DEL + LipiFlow — IPL reduces inflammation while thermal pulsation mechanically unblocks glands. Treating different mechanisms in a coordinated sequence delivers better outcomes than either approach alone.
Home-care support? Warm compresses, omega-3 supplementation, and lid-hygiene products that complement your IPL treatment are curated by our clinicians and available through U Shoppe.
